The Delaware Charity Challenge is a unique fundraising and athletic competition designed to give organizations, families, and individuals a fun way to raise money and awareness for their favorite causes. Teams that enter may designate any charity they want as a beneficiary of funds they raise as a team. Part of the proceeds from the race registrations and the race sponsorships will go into a prize pool that will be distributed among the charities that raise the most money and to the charities of the teams that win the individual race events on the day of the Delaware Charity Challenge.

Rough map of where the Adventure Challenge Relay competition events will take place.

The Adventure Relay Race will provide a fun challenge to those teams that want to compete in something other than a 5K.

The Adventure Challenge Relay is a competitive team relay race that is run concurrently with the 5K at the Delaware Charity Challenge spring games.

Adventure Challenge Team Relay

The Adventure Challenge Relay is a fun team relay event that is a separate competitive race at the Delaware Charity Challenge spring competition.

The 2019 Adventure Challenge Relay is open to all ages and is a lot of fun. The ACR will be divided into two divisions, pairs and teams. Pairs will complete all events; teams can divide up the events as they see fit. Scoring will be based on the number of teams depending on the event (e.g., 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 1 for 1-6 place for the various relay events).

Check-in for the teams in the Adventure Challenge Relay is at 8 a.m. and we will give a quick overview of where everything will take place and teams can practice the golf ball relay part while they wait. We will start the race once all teams have arrived or by 8:30, whichever is earlier. The race should be over by 10:15 am (roughly coinciding with the end of the 5K when the walkers cross the line) and we will have awards starting at approximately 10:30 a.m.

We strongly encourage teams to arrive between 7:45 and 8 a.m. to ensure we start on time! Please plan your travel time accordingly!

The events in the 2019 Adventure Challenge Relay are described below. We may make minor changes ahead of the race and will notify the team captains ahead of time with final details.

Event 1: Canoe Race (2 teammates)

  • The canoe race leg will follow the general path outlined in red on the map. Two teammates will race in canoes around the buoys that will be placed in the pond (indicated by red dots on the map). We will provide canoes and life jackets. The approximate distance will be about 1/2 mile. We anticipate this leg will take 15-20 minutes.

  • Points will be awarded based on your team's finish.

Event 2: First Run Leg (1 teammate)

  • Following the canoe race, the canoe racers will tag their runners who will race toward the docks to tag the teammates who will race the pedal boat leg. For those in the pairs division, both of you will run to the docks. Distance for this leg is about 1/4 mile.

  • No points for this leg but faster runners will have an advantage in having their teammates start the pedal boat leg.

Event 3: pedal boat Race (2 teammates)

  • After getting tagged by their runners, the pedal boat race teammates will hop in their pedal boats in a short race across the pond around a buoy and back. We will provide pedal boats and life jackets. The approximate distance for this leg will be about a 1/4 mile (path is roughly drawn in blue on the map). We anticipate this leg will take 10-15 minutes.

  • Note: The recommended max weight the pedal boats can handle is 320 pounds.

  • Points will be awarded based on your team's finish.

Event 4: Second Run Leg (1 teammate)

  • Following the pedal boat leg, the running teammate will tag up and race back to the bike leg start along the same trail (roughly 1/4 mile). For those in the pairs division, both of you will run toward the bike start line.

  • No points for the run but faster runners will have an advantage in their team starting the mountain bike leg.

Event 5: Mountain Bike Race (1 teammate)

  • For the mountain bike leg, it's an out and back course and we estimate that the entire trial is just short of 2.5 miles and should take about 15 minutes to complete. The mountain biker will need to bring a helmet and provide his or her own bike.

  • Notes on the trail: If you follow the dark blue swiggly trail on the map, you should see that the bike path runs in the woods and partially on pavement near the boat rentals, then across a couple of bridges and into the woods. Where the red trail starts is a little more than half a mile from the pavilion/start line. The red trail is windy, rooty, and narrow in parts and is 1 mile long. After you finish that bike trail back, you reverse the path you took to that trail and ride it back to the pavilion. When you get to the boat docks, it's about a 2 minute ride. There are places to pass on these trials, but not many. There are also a couple of spots where you will likely need to come to almost a complete stop to execute the turn or navigate through the path. Bikers will be expected to watch out for each other during the race and keep it fun.

  • Points will be awarded based on your team's finish.

  • In addition, bonus points will be awarded to the top three finishing teams since the bike leg completes the first relay circuit.

Event 6: Hula Hoop Relay (All TeAMMATes)

Event 7: Rock, paper, scissors RACE (all teammates)

  • This event involves teams racing each other along a short path with teammates advancing by winning a quick game of rock, paper, scissors.

  • Points will be awarded based on your team’s finish.

Event 8: Tic tac go (all teammates)

  • This event involves a relay race against the other teams to complete a tic tac toe. One teammate at a time races to drop their mark inside a hulu hoop tic tac toe board. After the third run, teammates can move pieces around (their own or their opponents) to complete the tic tac toe. First team to make a tic tac toe wins. Teams will compete in a round robin format with the winning teams advancing.

  • You can view video from a couple of the teams doing the event here (you do not need to be logged into Facebook to view the video).

  • Points will be awarded based on finishing place.

Event 8: Jigsaw Puzzle (all teammates)

  • Teams will work to solve a 54-piece jigsaw puzzle as quickly as possible. All teams will start at the same time.

  • Points will be awarded based on your team's finish.

The winning teams will be based on the combination score they put up when all of the different events are added together. We expect that the team that will get the most points will probably be the team who finishes in the lead the most, but different events can be won by any team so it will be fun.

The charity of the team in each division that wins the Adventure Challenge Relay will receive a portion of the prize pool money for their victory.
